Embalse de Cíjara is a large reservoir near Helechosa de los Montes in the La Siberia comarca of Extremadura. Created by the Cíjara dam, it impounds the upper Guadiana basin and is a defining feature of the local landscape: broad, irregular arms of water cutting into oak- and pine-covered hills, creating a mosaic of shoreline coves, islets and steep banks. Its importance is practical and ecological — the reservoir regulates river flow, supplies water for irrigation, and supports a hydroelectric installation, while also forming an extensive wetland habitat that attracts waterfowl, raptors and migratory species.
Historically, the dam and reservoir were built in the 20th century as part of regional water-management works that transformed upland agricultural practices and enabled energy production; that engineering context explains the reservoir’s scale and road access. Architecturally the dam is functional rather than ornamental, a concrete gravity structure whose presence is visible at the main spillway and access platform. Unique local features for visitors include sheltered coves ideal for sailing, kayak routes that explore narrow inlets, and well-known fishing grounds (angling requires the relevant regional license). Several small viewpoints and picnic areas around the shoreline provide panoramic vistas of the water framed by Mediterranean scrub and cork oak, making Cíjara a notable combination of utility, scenery and biodiversity in eastern Badajoz province.
