Elephanta Caves are a group of rock-cut cave temples on Gharapuri (Elephanta Island) in Mumbai Harbour, best known for their large, carved Hindu sculptures centered on Shaivite themes. Cut into volcanic basalt, the principal Cave 1 opens into a dim, columned hall containing monumental relief panels and the iconic three-headed Shiva (the Trimurti), whose scale and simplified, weathered faces dominate compositions. Light from the cave mouth outlines deep shadowed recesses and brings texture to the chisel marks and pitted stone; from the island's shoreline you get framed views of the temple façade against the bay. The island is reached by ferry from the city, and the caves’ atmospheric interiors reward compositions of scale, relief detail, and chiaroscuro.
