Parque del Buen Retiro — commonly El Retiro — is Madrid’s central historic green lung: a 125-hectare former royal leisure ground turned public park that combines landscaped gardens, monumental sculpture, waterways and cultural venues. It’s important as both a social hub for Madrileños and a concentrated ensemble of 19th‑ and early‑20th‑century civic art and architecture.

Created in the 17th century as the royal retreat for Philip IV, El Retiro opened to the public in the 19th century and later became integrated with the Paseo del Prado cultural axis (a UNESCO World Heritage extension). Key architectural and sculptural elements include the glass-and-iron Palacio de Cristal (1887–89 by Ricardo Velázquez Bosco) — a lightweight exhibition pavilion set in a lake — and the grand Monument to Alfonso XII, a marble and bronze colonnaded ensemble overlooking the Estanque Grande. The Rosaleda, formal parterres, statuary-lined promenades and the wide Paseo de las Estatuas give the park its distinctive layered character. Unique local features: the annual Feria del Libro (May), the historic boating tradition on the central pond, outdoor puppet/theatre programming, rotating exhibitions in Palacio de Cristal and Casa de Vacas, and frequent temporary art installations that tie the park closely to Madrid’s contemporary cultural life.
