El Palacio is the monumental centerpiece of the ancient Maya city of Sayil, near Santa Cruz Uno in southern Yucatán’s Puuc region. Raised in three stepped levels, the long limestone complex is lined with doorways that once opened into dozens of vaulted rooms, reflecting the scale and organization of a major Late Classic settlement. Its Puuc architecture combines strong horizontal lines with finely fitted stone decoration, now softened by weathering and surrounding forest. From the open forecourt, the stacked façade and repeating entrances create the clearest sense of symmetry and scale, while side light emphasizes the contrast between pale masonry, shadowed chambers, and textured carvings.
