📍 Mexico
El Castillo is the dominant temple within Tulum’s walled Maya city, rising near the limestone cliffs above the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo. Built in the Late Postclassic period, its stepped platform and compact upper sanctuary formed a ceremonial focal point for a settlement closely connected to coastal trade. The monument’s visual power comes from the contrast between weathered gray stone, low green vegetation, and vivid turquoise water; side views also reveal how dramatically the temple commands the shoreline. Visitors must remain on designated paths, as climbing and entering the structure are prohibited to protect the ruins.
