📍 Mexico
El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulcán, rises at the center of Chichén Itzá’s ceremonial core in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. This stepped Maya pyramid is organized around strong numerical and geometric patterns: four stairways ascend nine terraced levels, and the 91 steps on each side, combined with the upper platform, are commonly associated with the 365 days of the solar year. Its northern staircase is bordered by carved serpent heads; around the equinoxes, angled sunlight casts a sequence of triangular shadows along the balustrade, creating the appearance of a descending serpent linked to Kukulcán. Broad open space isolates the pyramid’s symmetrical profile, while low-angle light emphasizes its limestone texture and repeating steps. Climbing the monument is prohibited, preserving both the structure and its archaeological context.
