📍 From El Capitan Drive, United States
El Capitan is a vast granite monolith rising above Yosemite Valley in California’s Yosemite National Park; Tuolumne Meadows lies in a separate, high-country part of the park. Its cliff rises roughly 3,000 feet above the valley floor, exposing pale granite marked by dark streaks, cracks, and sweeping vertical walls. The projecting buttress called the Nose is a defining landmark of big-wall climbing, with climbers appearing as tiny specks against the immense rock face. Views from the valley’s meadows emphasize its scale, while the Merced River offers a contrasting foreground of water and trees beneath the sheer granite.
