📍 From Cliffside approach, Austria
Eisriesenwelt is a vast limestone cave system in the Tennengebirge mountains, high above Werfen and the Salzach valley in Austria’s Salzburg region. Its name means “World of the Ice Giants,” referring to the monumental ice formations within its entrance passages. The cave extends for more than 40 kilometres, but the ice is concentrated in the first kilometre, where freezing water creates columns, curtains and frozen cascades. Seasonal airflow helps maintain the cold conditions, while melting and refreezing reshape the formations over time. Visits are guided, and photography is not permitted inside the cave. For photographs, the mountain approach offers a contrasting scene: pale limestone cliffs above wooded slopes, with broad views across the Salzach valley.
