📍 From Drone, Finland
Eira is a small residential district in southern Helsinki, close to the Baltic waterfront, known for its early-20th-century villas and low-rise apartment buildings. Its curving streets, gardens and irregular plots reflect a garden-city approach to planning, distinct from the more formal street grid elsewhere in central Helsinki. Much of its architecture is Jugend, the local expression of Art Nouveau, with textured plaster, bay windows, decorative gables and varied rooflines. The Jugend-style Eira Hospital, designed by Lars Sonck, gave the district its name. For photographs, the neighborhood’s character lies in the relationship between buildings and greenery: pastel façades rise behind hedges, while bends in the streets reveal changing combinations of towers, balconies and pitched roofs.
