Egyetemi templom, or University Church, is an 18th-century Catholic church on Egyetem tér in central Pest, beside Eötvös Loránd University’s law faculty. Built for the Pauline order, it takes its familiar name from its later association with the university. Its twin-towered Baroque façade forms a distinctive backdrop to the square, with sculptural details drawing the eye upward. Inside, a single nave brings together side chapels, gilded ornament, an elaborately carved wooden pulpit and ceiling frescoes depicting the life of the Virgin Mary. The contrast between the open square and the richly layered interior gives exterior and interior photographs very different senses of scale.
