Egri vár, the Castle of Eger, rises above the historic center of this northern Hungarian city. Its defining chapter was the Ottoman siege of 1552, when a much smaller garrison led by István Dobó successfully defended the fortress, an episode later immortalized in Géza Gárdonyi’s novel Eclipse of the Crescent Moon. Surviving walls, bastions, underground passages and archaeological remains reveal its layered medieval and early modern military history. From the ramparts, photographs can frame Eger’s dense red-tiled roofs, Baroque churches, prominent basilica and slender Ottoman minaret, while the weathered stonework and angular defensive walls offer strong textures and geometry closer at hand. The castle also contains Gárdonyi’s grave, linking the site’s history with the writer who shaped its place in Hungarian cultural memory.
