Eger Basilica, formally the Cathedral Basilica of St John the Apostle, stands on Eszterházy Square opposite the city’s historic Lyceum. Built from 1831 to 1837 for Archbishop János László Pyrker and designed by József Hild, it is a major Hungarian Neoclassical landmark. Its broad ceremonial staircase, six monumental Corinthian columns and twin bell towers create a strongly symmetrical façade, while statues of Hungarian saints frame the approach. Inside, the restrained classical structure contrasts with richly painted ceilings, marble surfaces and an imposing organ. From the square, the colonnaded entrance and towers form the basilica’s most recognizable view, especially when low light emphasizes the steps and column relief.
