Edoras, the capital of Rohan in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, was built on Mount Sunday in the remote Ashburton Lakes district of Canterbury. The film set was removed after production, but the hill’s unmistakable profile remains amid tawny tussock, braided river flats and the mountain walls of the upper Rangitata Valley. A walking track leads to the summit, where broad views reveal why the isolated rise became the cinematic seat of the horse-lords: its natural elevation gives the landscape a monumental scale, with layered ridges and snow-streaked peaks forming the recognizable backdrop.
