Perched on Castle Rock, a basalt volcanic plug that rises above Edinburgh’s Old Town, Edinburgh Castle is a compact medieval fortress that has dominated the city skyline for centuries. The stone-built Royal Palace, curtain walls and cannon-strewn esplanade reveal layers of military, royal and civic history; the medieval bombard Mons Meg and Scotland’s Honours (the crown and regalia) are among the tangible artifacts associated with the site. Visually the castle reads as a jagged silhouette against the sky, its weathered ashlar and ramparts contrasting with the dark volcanic crag below; photographers often frame it from Princes Street Gardens or the lower Royal Mile to capture the vertical drama, the layered rooftops of the Old Town and long views out toward the Firth of Forth. The esplanade is also the stage for the annual Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which reinforces the castle’s ceremonial role.
