This modernista building forms part of the distinctive early-20th-century streetscape of central Melilla, Spain’s autonomous city on the North African coast. Much of the city’s Modernisme is concentrated in the Ensanche around Plaza de España, where commercial growth produced an unusual collection of richly decorated apartment blocks and civic buildings. Catalan architect Enrique Nieto, who settled in Melilla after working in Barcelona, shaped many of these façades. Floral stucco, sinuous lines, projecting balconies, wrought-iron railings and sculpted window surrounds create the style’s characteristic play of depth and shadow; framed closely, these details reveal the contrast between European Art Nouveau design and Melilla’s bright Mediterranean setting.
