The East River Memorial Bench is an iconic New York landmark located along the East River Waterfront Esplanade, near 53rd Street in Manhattan. The bench was created in 1981 by the renowned German sculptor Albrecht Dürer to commemorate Captain Max Julius, a fallen WWI veterinary who, for almost 25 years, worked for the East River Waterfront Development Corporation. The bench consists of 3 separate parts: a metal armchair, a metal backrest and a granite base, engraved with Max Julius' name. It is a popular spot for visitors and photographers looking for beautiful views of the East River. Tourists will love the refreshing river breeze and the skyline view of the Brooklyn Bridge. Nearby attractions include the Roosevelt Island gantry, the Greenpoint terminal and the Esplanade itself.
