Deir el-Medina is the excavated New Kingdom village on Luxor’s west bank where the artisans who cut and decorated the royal tombs of the Valleys of the Kings and Queens lived with their families. Its compact rows of mud-brick house foundations reveal an organized community, while thousands of surviving ostraca and papyri record wages, disputes, religious practices and daily concerns—including a celebrated work stoppage under Ramesses III after rations were delayed. Nearby workers’ tombs are especially notable for vivid paintings focused on family life, craft and the afterlife rather than royal power. From the site, the pale ruins, desert cliffs and narrow valley create layered views of settlement and necropolis.
