Nagoya is home to the imposing, 18th-century Dutch Windmill, which was built in the classic style in 1903 by the Meiji-era Mayor of Nagoya. It stands next to the original Nagoya Castle, where the homeless take shelter. The windmill is the only remaining monument of Japanese-Dutch friendship from a period of cultural exchange at the beginning of the twentieth century. Visitors can go inside the windmill and see its inner machinery. Its impressive size and unique style make for a must-see on any trip to Nagoya. The windmill is easily accessible from the center of Nagoya, with a short stroll from Nagoya Castle. Admission to the Dutch Windmill is always free and the views of the castle from the windows of the windmill are stunning.
