The DuSable Bridge is an iconic three-span bascule bridge in Chicago, spanning the Chicago River. It was completed in 1928, to replace the Michigan Avenue Bridge, which had its main span damaged in a scandal involving construction fraud. It is also the first bridge in Chicago to be opened for navigation. It has two riverfront plazas and its two movable spans are designed to accommodate large ships. The bridge also serves as a bike and pedestrian pathway and serves as the gateway to the city from its downtown core. Its bascule span can be raised and lowered for the passage of larger ships without interrupting the flow of traffic along one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares. The bridge can also be lit up for special occasions, making for a great vantage point for photographers and pedestrians to experience the beauty of the river and downtown.
