Durie Hill
📍 From Moutoa Quay, New Zealand
Durie Hill is worth a visit for its stunning views, historic architecture and its intriguing secret underground maze. This hillside suburb of Whanganui is the site of a 1913 elevator, built to transport people from the city up to the summit. At the top stands the grand Durie Hill Memorial Tower, commemorating the centenary of the Battle of Gate Pa in 1865. The 39-step climb to the observation deck offers sweeping vistas right across town. Durie Hill also hides an unexpected surprise – a network of underground chambers and passages, which were used as air-raid shelters during WWII. Descend through the stone steps and enter the eerie, mysterious chambers below. Before leaving, be sure to take the lift back to the surface and experience the incredible view.
