The Duomo di Siena, also known as the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, is a magnificent Gothic-style cathedral located in the historic centre of the Tuscan city of Siena. The cathedral was begun in 1215 and completed in 1264, and it features an impressive black and white marble facade adorned with statues, elaborate stone carvings, and symbols denoting the city's storied history. Inside the Duomo, visitors can admire countless works of art created by some of the greatest Renaissance and medieval artists of the era. These include a fresco by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, a sculpture by Michelangelo, and paintings by Pinturicchio, Donatello and many others. Also inside is the beautiful Piccolomini Library, known for its frescoed vaulted ceiling and stunning walnut staircase. The cathedral is a must-see when visiting Siena!
