The Duomo di Siena, or the Cathedral of Siena, is a majestic sight in the heart of the Tuscan city of Siena. The monument stands tall on the hill Piazza del Duomo and boasts of its beautiful architecture. Built in 1215, the Duomo was built in the Roman-Gothic style and the façade is elaborately decorated in the stunning black and white stripes. Inside, the Duomo is home to numerous works of art- statues, frescoes and paintings. The highlight of the cathedral is the Piccolomini Library featuring intricately decorated walls and ceilings. The library room has to be seen to be believed. The library also contains the original illuminated choir books from the 16th century. Besides, the pulpit and the fountain in the center of the nave are also worth seeing. Siena is perfect to spend an afternoon soaking up the beauty of the Duomo and making sure to stop at all of the side chapels and look for the tombs of the great Sienese heroes!
