Known locally as the Duomo, Santa Maria Assunta is Asolo’s principal church, beside Piazza Garibaldi in the historic center of this hill town in Veneto. Its interior holds Lorenzo Lotto’s Assumption of the Virgin, dated 1506, connecting the church’s dedication to the town’s Renaissance artistic heritage. Outside, the façade and bell tower form part of the piazza’s compact architectural ensemble. A view that includes the surrounding buildings conveys how closely Asolo’s religious and civic spaces sit together, rather than presenting the church as an isolated monument.
