Duomo di San Martino is Lucca’s cathedral, facing Piazza San Martino in the southern part of the walled historic centre. Its Romanesque marble façade combines three tiers of small arcades with richly varied carved columns; the unusually narrow right-hand porch bay beside the bell tower gives the frontage its distinctive asymmetry. A small labyrinth carved into a porch pier offers a striking contrast of scale with the monumental architecture. Inside, the cathedral preserves the Volto Santo, a revered wooden crucifix that has drawn pilgrims for centuries, and Jacopo della Quercia’s marble tomb of Ilaria del Carretto. Her reclining figure, finely carved clothing and the dog at her feet make the monument one of the cathedral’s most recognizable works.
