The Duomo dei Santi Mariano e Giacomo is Gubbio’s cathedral and the seat of the local diocese, standing in the upper historic center near the Palazzo Ducale on the slope of Monte Ingino. Dedicated to the martyrs Marianus and James, it reflects the austere medieval character of the city: a restrained stone façade, pointed portal and circular window give way to a broad single-nave interior articulated by imposing pointed arches. From the narrow, sloping approach, the cathedral’s pale masonry, compact geometry and close relationship with the surrounding palaces convey the dense vertical structure of Gubbio, where major civic and religious buildings rise in tiers above the Umbrian landscape.
