📍 Ireland
Dún Aonghasa is an Iron Age fort on the Aran Islands off the coast of County Galway, Ireland. It was inhabited from the 1st century BC up until the 16th century and the spectacular fortification is the centerpiece of this beautiful and rugged landscape. Situated at the edge of a 300-foot (90 m) cliff overlooking the wild Atlantic Ocean, Dún Aonghasa is a sight to behold. Dún Aonghasa, which translates to “Aonghasa’s Fort”, is made up of a collection of stone walls, ramparts and terracing. Archaeologists suggest the fort was constructed in multiple stages and it is an excellent example of the skill and engineering of the people living in the Iron Age. The fort complex is surrounded by a particularly steep cliff, making it difficult to access – the only entrance is a long, winding stairwell carved out of the base of the cliff. This unique site is perfect for sightseers, photographers and hikers looking to explore a breathtaking and educational piece of Ireland’s history.
