📍 Serbia
Drvengrad, also known as Mećavnik, is a purpose-built wooden village on a hill above Mokra Gora in western Serbia, near the Šargan Eight heritage railway. Created by filmmaker Emir Kusturica during the making of Life Is a Miracle, it draws on traditional Serbian rural architecture but is a contemporary cultural project, not an old settlement. Timber houses with steep roofs, wooden walkways and a small Orthodox church create a compact village scene against forested mountain slopes. The contrast between textured wood, colorful doors and windows, and the surrounding landscape gives photographs a distinctive sense of place. Streets named after writers, filmmakers and other cultural figures reflect Kusturica’s interests, while the recurring Küstendorf Film and Music Festival brings international cinema into this deliberately rustic setting.
