Drumheller Badlands
📍 Canada
The Drumheller Badlands spread through the Red Deer River valley in southern Alberta, where open prairie gives way to deeply cut gullies, exposed rock layers and isolated hoodoos. Erosion has carved the softer sedimentary rocks into steep, folded slopes, revealing bands of sandstone, mudstone and coal that record ancient environments. These Late Cretaceous deposits are renowned for dinosaur fossils, a history explored at the Royal Tyrrell Museum near Drumheller. The area’s recognizable hoodoos are slender pillars sheltered by harder capstones, their narrow forms contrasting with the broad valley walls. Photographically, the landscape is defined by its horizontal stripes, branching erosion channels and sparse vegetation; people, roads and the river provide scale against slopes that can otherwise appear almost abstract.
