Dragon's Gate in San Francisco is a public monument located at the entrance of Chinatown. Built in 1970 by American artist and sculptor Ruth Asawa, it displays the symbolic western and eastern entrance gates of the old Chinatown. The imposing gates feature four dragon sculptures, representing the four elements - earth, air, fire, and water. Adorning the gates are detailed murals, tile mosaics, and small figures of Chinese mythical creatures. Dragon’s Gate stands as a symbol of cultural identity for the vibrant community living in Chinatown. It is the most recognizable landmark of the area and is a popular tourist stop. Many people often leave behind tokens and coins in the crevices of the gate to bring good luck.
