
Cape Sounio is an area south-east of Athens, Greece. The main feature is the ruins of the ancient temple of Poseidon, god of the sea in Greek mythology. Visitors are able to tour the temple and its various monuments, including a monumental altar and the Temple of Athena. You can also spot the only two surviving multi-storey buildings of the ancient Athenian fortification from the Peloponnesian War. Inside the fort are also the remains of a number of ancient tombs of notable Athenian citizens, known as the Heroön of Themistocles. This area is also famous for its breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding islands. There are several paths and trails for trekking and exploring the area.
