Dokdo
📍 From Dokto Observatory, South Korea
Dokdo is an island located in the East Sea of Korea (also known as the Sea of Japan), administratively a part of Ulleung-gun, South Korea. This secluded yet beautiful island is composed of two main islets (East and West Dokdo), several small rock islets, and an amazing 50m high (164 ft) lighthouse.

The islets provide the perfect escape to get away from bustling Seoul, as the island has no permanent inhabitants, but is patrolled by South Korean police and military forces. Wildlife is abundant here, with plentiful sea birds and the rare species of Siberian salamanders living on the Eastern island. For hikers, the Eastern island has challenging hills that easy-going walkers can also ascend and enjoy the view of the ocean while sightseeing beautiful flora. There is also a breathtaking view at night of the countless stars and the Milky Way. It is quite a challenge to get to the island, as there are no scheduled ferries, but visitors may be able to join one of the occasional group visits. Dokdo is truly a hidden gem surrounded by nature and perfect for those who want to get the essence and the wild beauty of South Korea.
