Diwan-i-Am, the Hall of Public Audience, stands within Agra Fort’s imperial complex near the Yamuna River. Commissioned under the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, it was the setting where the ruler heard petitions and conducted ceremonial affairs before courtiers and subjects. Its broad, open-fronted hall is defined by rows of cusped arches and slender columns, creating strong symmetry and repeating shadows. Although built largely of red sandstone, the pale plastered surfaces evoke the refined marble aesthetic associated with Shah Jahan’s architecture. At the rear, the raised marble throne alcove marks the former focus of the court, while the spacious forecourt conveys the scale and formality of Mughal public ceremony.
