📍 Ireland
The beautiful ‘Die grüne Hölle’ (‘The Green Hell’) is a site of scenic beauty located in Poulnamuck, Ireland. It consists of a stunning mixture of rivers and wetland meadows, bounded with wildflower-strewn grasslands, copses of birch and ash trees and an abundance of bracken and heather. This majestic site also features a 32 mile walking and cycling trail, waterfalls and dramatic views across wooded hills and rugged glens. As well as its natural beauty, there is plenty to explore in the form of castles, churches, monasteries and an ancient graveyard. There are also a number of archaeological sites including the ruined Normanna structure of an old fort and a Celtic reverse ring fort. Die grüne Hölle is a haven for wildlife, with a full array of birdlife and other wildlife species; the area is particularly renowned for its otters and its richly varied butterfly populations. The only way to access the area is by car or on foot, with no public transport available.
