Diaoshuilou Waterfall marks the northern outlet of Jingpo Lake near Ning’an, within Mudanjiang in Heilongjiang Province. The lake formed when volcanic lava blocked the Mudan River, and the falls reveal that geological history as water spills over a dark basalt ledge into a deep plunge pool. The broad, curved cliff edge gives the cascade its distinctive shape, with white water contrasting sharply against the volcanic rock. Its appearance changes with the river’s flow: high water creates a sweeping curtain, while lower levels expose more of the rugged ledge. In winter, ice formations transform the waterfall and surrounding cliffs, giving this volcanic landscape a markedly different texture.
