Dhow Harbour
📍 Qatar
Dhow Harbour in Doha is the city’s working waterfront where traditional wooden dhows—Qatar’s historic sailing and fishing vessels—are moored alongside modern quays. It’s important as a living link to the peninsula’s maritime past: dhows were central to pearl diving, coastal trade and fishing long before oil transformed the economy. Many vessels here retain classic dhow forms—narrow, deep hulls, high prows and broad sterns—built with teak or other hardwoods, often repaired and maintained by local shipwrights using time-honored techniques. The harbour’s timber masts, carved rudders and varnished hulls present a striking contrast to Doha’s glass skyline, making it visually and culturally distinctive. Unique to this location are scheduled dhow cruises that depart from the harbour for Corniche and bay tours, and occasional displays during maritime festivals that showcase traditional seamanship and vessel parades. Adjacent seafood quays and nearby souqs concentrate fresh-catch trade, so visitors witness both active boat maintenance and the commercial rhythms that sustain Doha’s coastal heritage.
