📍 Malaysia
Dhammikarama Burmese Temple stands on Burma Lane in George Town’s Pulau Tikus district, opposite the Thai Buddhist Wat Chayamangkalaram. Founded in 1803, it is widely recognized as Malaysia’s oldest Burmese Buddhist temple and reflects Penang’s long-established Burmese community. The active Theravada complex is distinguished by tiered roofs, gilded ornament, carved mythical guardians, Buddha images and a garden courtyard, creating rich contrasts of gold, red and white. Its symmetrical gateways and detailed shrine interiors are especially recognizable in photographs. Visitors should remove footwear before entering prayer halls and dress respectfully.
