📍 Colombia
The Desierto de la Tatacoa lies near Villavieja in northern Huila, within Colombia’s Magdalena River valley. Despite its name, it is a tropical dry-forest landscape rather than a true desert. Erosion has cut its sedimentary terrain into narrow gullies, ridges, and sculpted earth columns, with two distinctly different palettes: the rusty red and ochre formations of El Cuzco and the pale gray terrain of Los Hoyos. Cacti and scattered shrubs punctuate the exposed ground, while shadows reveal the depth and texture of the channels. Fossil-rich deposits make Tatacoa an important site for understanding South America’s prehistoric mammals, adding a deeper history to its stark appearance. Low light pollution also supports local astronomical observatories, linking this recognizable daytime landscape with nighttime views of the sky.
