De Koe (“The Cow”) is a unique Dutch farmstead in the medieval town of Veere in the Netherlands. This impressive 16th-century building has become an icon of the town and was used as a town gate during the time of Veere’s Golden Age. It’s most famous feature is its two-story octagonal “milking shed”, which is believed to be the oldest building of its kind in the Netherlands. Visitors can explore the fascinating interior of the shed, featuring 17th-century brick flooring and vaults. Also worth seeing are the fascinating interior of the farmyard, a small museum dedicated to the history of Veere, and the farmhouse of “De Koe” itself. Its location on the harbor adds to the picturesque atmosphere of this historic spot. Visitors are welcome to take photos of De Koe and its surroundings, but be aware it is also a private residence.
