Dashashwamedh Ghat is one of Varanasi’s principal riverfront steps, set on the Ganges near the old city and Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Its Sanskrit name refers to ten horse sacrifices, linking the site to Hindu ritual tradition. From dawn, pilgrims descend the broad stone terraces to bathe, pray and board wooden boats, creating a layered scene of worship, commerce and daily life against the dense riverside architecture. At dusk, the ghat becomes the setting for the daily Ganga Aarti, when priests perform synchronized rites with tiered lamps, incense and bells; flames and smoke stand out against the darkening river and reflect across the water. The ceremony draws heavy crowds, so photography should not obstruct worshippers, and permission is appropriate before making close portraits.
