📍 Japan
Kakigara Inari is a small Inari shrine within the grounds of Hase-dera, the celebrated Buddhist temple in Kamakura’s Hase district. Its name means “Oyster-Shell Inari” and reflects Hase-dera’s tradition that oyster shells attached to its Eleven-Headed Kannon image helped guide the sacred statue to shore. Oyster shells inscribed with wishes are offered here in place of conventional wooden ema, giving the shrine a distinctive texture and an intimate connection to the sea. Red torii gates and banners frame the compact sanctuary, while the pale, irregular shells create unusual patterns and close-up details. Although dedicated to a Shinto deity, the shrine’s presence inside a Buddhist temple illustrates the long-standing interweaving of the two traditions in Japan.
