📍 From Camping Ground, New Zealand
Curio Bay, located in the Catlins area of New Zealand, is a geological wonder of ancient times. With sandy beaches, steep cliffs and rocky outcroppings, it was a popular archosaur breeding site 180 million years ago. Now, it is home to endangered marine wildlife, including yellow-eyed penguins and Hector's dolphins. You can take a kayak tour and spot many of the birds and sea creatures that call this place home, while enjoying the stunning views of the coastline. Head to Porpoise Bay to witness the world's only remaining Reflection of Life fossils - fossilized trees, plants, and shells. There's also the Petrified Forest, an ancient petrified log forest, accessible with a 20-minute walk. Other points of interest at Curio Bay include Cathedral Caves and McLean Falls. Spend time wandering the picturesque beach as the tide ebbs and flows, enjoy the quiet and explore the unique ecosystems.
