It is situated on the Gothic-style cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, popularly known as the 'Duomo'. Designed and partially completed by famed architect Filippo Brunelleschi in the 15th century, it remains one of the largest masonry domes in the world today. Standing at over 80 meters tall, the monumental dome is composed of marble and pink limestone, and is adorned with ornate terracotta decorative elements. The cupola is augmented by a complex network of galleries, passageways and spiral staircases, used to access the roof. Large windows allow for spectacular views of Florence and its surroundings and make for an unforgettable experience. The masterpiece can be admired from the outside, with access to the interior areas for a fee.
