Cuadrangulo de las Monjas, in Uxmal, Mexico, is a large courtyard that is widely recognized as one of the largest and most impressive architecture in Mayan civilization. It is renowned for its intricately carved limestone walls and its great size - the structure measures 400ft by 300ft and is two stories high. From the entrance, visitors are able to take in the sheer majesty of the courtyard, and experience the unique atmosphere. The main focal point of the courtyard is the Temple of the System of the Nun, which can be accessing by a staircase that faces the entrance. Visitors are able to explore the temple, which is rich with Mayan symbolism and iconography. A walk around the perimeter reveals carvings of masks and figures, as well as hieroglyphics, which give insight into the beliefs and culture of the Mayans. This spectacular site is a must-see for all visitors to Uxmal.
