Crystal River Archaeological State Park is a significant historical site located in Crystal River, Florida. This 61-acre state park is renowned for its well-preserved Native American mounds, which date back to the pre-Columbian era, approximately 500 BCE to 1000 CE. These mounds were constructed by the indigenous people of the region, known as the Weeden Island culture, and served as ceremonial and burial sites. The park is a testament to the complex social and ceremonial practices of these early Floridian communities.

The site includes six mounds, a plaza area, and a significant midden, providing insights into the daily lives and spiritual beliefs of its ancient inhabitants. The largest mound, Temple Mound A, stands about 30 feet high and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area, once used for ceremonial gatherings. Visitors can explore a paved path that leads through the park, including interpretive signage that provides context and historical information. The park's museum houses a collection of artifacts recovered from the site, such as pottery, shell tools, and ceremonial items, offering a deeper understanding of the culture that thrived here. Unique to this park is its location along the Crystal River, a waterway that was vital for trade and transportation for the indigenous people. The park also hosts annual events, including an archaeology day, which provides hands-on learning opportunities and insights into the archaeological methods used to uncover the site's history.
