Cruz Alta is the monumental cross beside the Basilica of the Holy Trinity at the Sanctuary of Fátima, standing at one end of its vast pilgrimage esplanade. Created by German sculptor Robert Schad and installed in 2007, the 34-metre structure is made of weathering steel, whose oxidized surface gives it a rust-brown color. Its angular silhouette offers a contemporary interpretation of the cross, contrasting with the basilica’s broad, low profile and the sanctuary’s pale stone architecture. Across the open square, pilgrims provide a sense of its imposing scale, while the uncluttered sky emphasizes the distinctive bends of its upright and arms.
