Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, located in Colorado’s rugged San Luis Valley, is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America. Rising 750 feet from the valley floor, the dunes are a spectacular sight to behold. The nearest town is Alamosa and visitors can access the park from either Highway 17 or US Highway 160. Accessed by a 4 mile unpaved road, the dunes are a great spot for hikers and adventurers looking to explore, as well as families eager to design their own unique sand sculptures. From atop High Dune, visitors can also witness breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and terrain as far as the eye can see. There is no fee to enter the park, and parking passes are available at the Visitors Center.
