Cristo Re is a large outdoor statue of Christ set on the rocky promontory at Santa Maria di Leuca, the southern tip of the Salento peninsula where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet. Its importance is both religious and geographic: the figure crowns the cape that has long been a landmark for sailors and pilgrims arriving at the town’s waterfront and basilica.
