The Cripta della Cattedrale sits beneath Otranto’s Romanesque cathedral on the town’s seafront hill, functioning as the church’s subterranean chapel and burial chamber. The low vaulted space is visually compelling for its dense, tactile layering of stone: squat columns, worn capitals and flagstone tomb slabs create a compact, intimate interior that contrasts with the cathedral above. Light is subdued, throwing soft side-shadows that emphasize carved details and weathered textures; the crypt’s scale, repetition of arches and close viewpoints reward careful composition and slow exposures. Entrance is through the cathedral; as a consecrated space, photography that respects worship and other visitors is appropriate.
