The Cripta della Cattedrale di Maria Santissima Assunta sits beneath Lecce’s cathedral in the Piazza Duomo and is the cathedral’s subterranean liturgical and funerary chamber. Carved from the warm, honey-colored pietra leccese, the space concentrates the city’s sculptural Baroque detail into a low, intimate vault of columns, capitals and funerary slabs that record layers of local devotion. Photography rewards close studies of worn carved textures, the rhythm of repeated columns and the way subdued, directional light models relief surfaces; the crypt’s compact scale and rich stone color make for intimate, tactile compositions.
