Crete senesi Asciano
📍 From Drone, Italy
The Crete Senesi are the clay hills southeast of Siena, with Asciano at the heart of this distinctive Tuscan landscape. Their name refers to soils formed from sediments deposited by an ancient sea. Erosion has shaped the terrain into deeply furrowed gullies known as calanchi and pale, rounded clay mounds called biancane, contrasting with the region’s wooded hills and vineyards. Cultivated fields change from spring green to golden stubble and exposed earth after harvest, while isolated farmhouses and rows of cypresses punctuate the rolling horizons. Around Asciano, the recognizable scene comes from the interplay of agricultural geometry and irregular landforms: field boundaries trace the slopes, trees give a sense of scale, and low, slanting light reveals the folds and textures of the clay.
